I have been exploring Costa Rica because of these stone spheres. Â Most of what is written about these incredible artifacts is inaccurate. Â The best information can be found in the University of Pennsylvania Library. The original field report documenting the discovery of these spheres is amazing. They were built on earthen pyramids braced by wooden walls. The spheres and the pyramid remains were found buried roughly 20 feet underground. The spheres were moved to make way for banana and palm oil plantations. A rumor started that the spheres were hollow and contained gold. Many were blown up. Most were moved to town squares and used as decorations in private gardens, destroying whatever context they may have had as a larger arrangement. Â There is one remaining area where the spheres can be observed in their original location. I plan to visit this area soon.
