The second nation of Atlantis was given to Eumelus, the twin brother of Atlas. Plato references two names for Eumelus. The Greek version, Eumelus and the ancient Spanish version, Gadeirus. My accuracy in placing Eumelus on the map is tenuous at best. I am guessing it was an Island nation near the European or African coasts because of Plato’s reference to ancient Spain. There are two places Eumelus could have existed. One is where I placed it and the other is the submerged land masses associated with the Canary Islands. I didn’t place Eumelus over the Canary Islands because in 11,000 BC these islands and the surrounding submerged land masses appeared to be attached to the continents. A true Island nation would have been easier to defend.
If I am correct, I find it interesting that Atlas got the choicest location for his country while his twin brother got stuck with a country a fraction of the size and tasked with defending the eastern border of the empire. Tough luck for being born a few minutes after his brother. Maybe that would be another reason Poseidon kept the twins and their descendants far apart from each other.
Okay I’m wrong. Google Earth is really helpful when trying to create shorelines. Nation Geographic sea maps didn’t come close to helping me map Eumelus. It is too small a country to tease out of the mud. If ocean floor coring samples were taken in the two spots I indicated in red, I would not be surprised if debris indicating human habitation was found there. I saw evidence in Central America where signs of an advanced civilization was buried under a more primitive civilization. The same could be true for any evidence found of Eumelus. It would be buried deep under the floor of the ocean. More primitive artifacts would be found closer to the surface and more advanced artifacts would be found at deeper levels. I believe evidence of Eumelus regional capitol would be located in the areas circled in red. These are logical port locations and most easily defended from sea and land assault. The debris would be buried in two layers separated by a thick layer of ash, wind blown soil from the Americas, and sand from Africa. This deposition layer would contain no evidence of Eumelus or any primitive culture that tried to recolonize the destroyed nation. Following my string of guesses, three hundred feet below the floor of the ocean primitive artifacts and debris would be found. Eight hundred to a thousand feet below the floor of the ocean more advanced artifacts and debris would be found. Maybe I will live long enough to see my prediction proven correct. Wouldn’t that be something!
