Update June 10, 2010. Another Asteroid Belt Near Jupiter:
Here is another link to the event sent to me by Ron Smith. This article talks about a second asteroid belt orbiting the sun near Jupiter. It implies that this second belt is the source of all the impacts. But why do the impacts and captures happen on one side of the sun? Why do they happen in a pattern that curves around the sun counterclockwise? And how would this explain Uranus being hit and its axis tilted 90 degrees to the orbital plane?
A second asteroid belt orbiting the sun in the same region as Jupiter would not explain why Jupiter is only getting hit when it is on one side of the sun. Could the second asteroid belt be evidence of a binary star losing asteroids to the Sun during close approach?
Thanks Ron for this information!
Thanks for reading.
